Polina

A sommelier and a wine tour guide. I travel all around Portugal collecting the best wineries to visit, best places to stay and eat.

I organize wine tours in the Douro Valley.

Porto is about wine.  The city is  bursting with places to taste and drink local wine.

Simple corner bars, trendy local spots, high-end wine bars, natural wine bars, port wine houses in Gaia and official wine tasting establishments are among the choices. As in every city, you need to know places in Porto and to avoid tourist traps.

Call me a wine snob, but too many Porto bars and restaurants only have a selection of red and white on their wine list.

To get an excellent wine experience in Porto, follow my recommendations of the best wine bars in Porto

Capela Incomum

This little bar with only 6 tables inside is a former family chapel dedicated to San Antonio. His figure is carved on the wooden altar.

Tucked away from the tourist crowds, Capela Incomum offers a solid wine list, an extensive selection of port, and high-quality tapas and snacks.

The staff is very knowledgeable to recommend a wine to your taste.

The price of wine by the glass ranges from 4 to 6 euros.  Reservations are very much recommended, as seating is limited and the place is popular among locals and tourists alike.

Outside seating is also available during the summer.

Prova

Prova is a specialized wine bar near Palacio da Bolsa on the border of the Ribeira neighbourhood. Founded by a sommelier Diogo Amado, the bar has a wide selection of Portuguese wines from various wine regions.

Your sommelier will ask you for your preferred wine style: fruity and young, or grippy tannins, and will suggest an suitable choice for you. Wines are available by the glass or by the bottle.

My favourite at Prova is the Bairrada sparkling wine with a selection of fine Portuguese cheeses.

Prova is about calm sophisticated atmosphere with subtle jazz music in the background. Truly, it is one of the best wine experiences in Porto.

Aduela

I asked three locals about their favourite bar in Porto and they all said Aduela. This bar is not to be missed if you want to dive into local Porto life.

Aduela is not a fancy bar. The bar offers a good selection of simpler Portugese wines by the glass.

The main thing about Aduela is its friendly atmosphere. A buzzing place with a terrace, inexpensive drinks and some simple Portuguese tapas Aduela is the place to meet for locals.  Besides wine, there is also a good selection of beer. “We serve almost everything” is the bar motto.

Also, it is a great value – wine prices range from 2 to 4 euros per glass.

No reservations, just drop-in and join the crowd.

Candelabro

Another local gem Candelabro is a wine bar with a bohemian vibe. This bar located in the Baixa neighbourhood offers a good selection of wine and cocktails at reasonable prices.  Candelabro has a very cool soundtrack.

Order at the bar and grab a seat outside to enjoy people watching.  Apparently, this bar is also a favourite first date spot.

Wine prices: 3 to 6 euros per glass.

Address: Rua da Conceição 3, 4050-215 Porto

Mind the Glass

Conveniently located on the square of Gomes Teixeira (known as the Lions’ Square), Mind the Glass is a bar and a restaurant with over 600 bottles most of which you can try by the glass.

There is also a large selection of cocktails and beers to enjoy on a covered terrace.

Whether you are coming for a drink or a full dinner, Mind the Glass is an excellent spot right in the center of Porto: modern, friendly and relaxed.

Address: Praça de Gomes Teixeira 36, 4050-161 Porto

A Cave do Bon Vivant

Founded by a French couple this bar offers a huge selection of Portuguese, French and international wines by the glass or by the bottle. Most of them are organic, biodynamic and natural wines by small producers.

There bar has a nice terrace on the back with outdoor seating.

The snack menu is seasonal and the food is delicious. Come enjoy the cozy atmosphere of Cave do Bon Vivant and practice your French!  Parlons français!

Arco das Verdades

Arco das Verdades is a new wine bar on the stairs leading from the Porto Cathedral down to the Douro river.

As you enter the bar, the fantastic views of the river, the Dom Luis I bridge and the city of Gaia open up to you.

The bar’s specialty are the wines of Northern Portugal. Owners Alexei and Tatiana take wine selection very seriously looking for the best local wines.

As a sommelier, I must say, that you will not make a mistake if you are looking to taste the best wines of Portugal here.  The little bites in the Mediterranean style are also very good at this bar.

In the winter, Arco das Verdades organizes jazz concerts in their cozy fireplace room.

Open from Thursday to Monday from 1 pm to 9 pm.
