Natural Wine Bars in Porto

A sommelier and a wine tour guide. I travel all around Portugal collecting the best wineries to visit, best places to stay and eat.

I organize wine tours in the Douro Valley.

The natural wine bar scene is growing everywhere, and Porto is not an exception in this trend following the interest in organic, minimal intervention wines.

Natural wines are often lighter, can have unusual, funky aromas, flavours and colours.  To me, a glass of natural wine is always a unique story of a passionate winemaker, a grape variety and a terroir.

Portuguese wine producers are excelling in natural wines. Antonio Madeira, Filipa Pato, Tiago Teles, and João Tavares de Pina are just a few of the famous names to discover when in Portugal.

Wine bar hopping is one of the must-do things in Porto. Why not explore a natural wine bar scene on a rainy day in Porto?

These are my recommendations of the natural wine spots in the city.  Besides interesting wines, these places offer good high-quality bites.

Which are the Best Natural Wine Bars in Porto?

A Cave Do Bon Vivant

My recent favourite is A Cave do Bon Vivant.  Located on rua Santa Catarina, which is a central spot, but away from crowds, this is a family bar founded by a French family.

The ambiance is relaxed, with a great selection of natural wines, not limited to Portuguese. The owners are chatty and friendly, and last but certainly not least, they serve excellent bites and hot dishes with a French twist to accompany a nice bottle.

Among other pluses are a cosmopolitan atmosphere and an excellent playlist.

Many wines are available by the glass and you can taste them before buying.

My introduction to Genuino came through a friend’s recommendation for their excellent cocktails, but this place offers much more than just that. Genuino opened its doors in Cedofeita on Rua de Miguel Bombarda two years ago.

It’s well worth the stroll up from Ribeira to explore this artsy neighborhood and stumble upon this eclectic natural bar and restaurant. The atmosphere exudes coziness and warmth, and I particularly like Genuino’s retro decor. Owners Gabriela Johann and Gustavo Schmidt, a Brazilian couple, are often seen behind the bar or in the kitchen.

While the selection of wines by the glass isn’t vast, it’s carefully curated and rotates weekly. They offer a variety of still wines and pet nats—whites, reds, rosés, and oranges. We took Gustavo’s recommendation for a bottle once and were not disappointed!

Reservations at Genuino are recommended to secure your spot.

Gito is a cozy natural wine bar nestled in Baixa, right in the heart of Porto’s historic center and amidst the lively bustle.

Here, you can savor excellent Portuguese natural wines by the glass while chatting with the owner.

While they offer a selection of snacks to accompany your glass, it’s worth noting that they may not suffice for a full dinner. However, if you find a bottle you love, you’re welcome to take it home, as Gito also functions as a wine shop.

Cave Bombarda

Cave Bombarda is a natural wine shop, well known by wine enthusiasts in Porto for great selection of natural and biodynamic wines from several regions of Portugal.

Jorge, the owner, used to work in Paris. After taking a sommelier course in 2018 he turned into natural wines.

Ask Jorge for recommendations, get a bottle and enjoy a couple of glasses at a table outside.  Life can’t get much better than this!

Taberna Folias de Baco

Taberna Folias do Baco, located in the heart of Porto Ribeira on Rua dos Caldeireiros, currently stands as the nearest natural bar to the city center of Porto. I have a personal attachment to this place, as I used to stay in the apartment just above the bar, and it has since become my go-to spot for a glass of wine.

The owners craft their own wine in Douro, which they proudly serve alongside a delightful array of snacks, including a vegan selection.

Please note that it is better to book Taberna Folias do Baco in advance.

Cash only, please.
