A sommelier and a wine tour guide. I travel all around Portugal collecting the best wineries to visit, best places to stay and eat.

I organize wine tours in the Douro Valley.

Beaches are just outside from the city of Porto and can be easily reached by bus, tram and metro from the City of Porto in approximately 30-45 minutes.

Are there Beaches Close to Porto?

There are several Atlantic beaches close to Porto that are easily accessible from the city centre by public transportation or by car.

Porto is located on the north banks of the Douro River which flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

The Foz do Douro area, called just “Foz” is right at the mouth of the river. The beaches of Foz do Douro are the closest to the city of Porto.  They are quite small and rocky.  There are excellent views from some very nice beach cafes.

Praia do Aquario

Matosinhos beach is a wide sandy beach popular among local residents. The beach is situated in a bay, which makes it sheltered from strong winds and waves, creating calm waters that are ideal for swimming, surfing, and other water sports. The beach is also equipped with various facilities, including showers, changing rooms, and sun loungers, making it a comfortable spot to spend the day.

Matosinhos beach is surrounded by a promenade lined with restaurants, cafes, and bars, making it a popular spot for dining and nightlife.

Sunset at Matosinhos beach

Across the river from Foz do Douro, in Vila Nova de Gaia, there are more beaches excellent for walks and sunbathing.

It would take you over an hour on foot from Porto city center to reach the closest beach Praia do Carneiro.

If you are not up for a long walk, below are some public transportation options.

Porto Beaches by Bus

Bus 500 is a blue doubledecker bus circulating between the Sao Bento train station in the historic center of Porto and the market of Matosinhos on a regular schedule.  Do not mix it up with light blue and red tourist hop-on hop-off buses.

Route 500 goes through the Ribeira district, passing by the Douro River.  It then goes along the coast through the Foz do Douro area and ends in Matosinhos.

It is convenient to board the bus either at Sao Bento train station or in Ribeira at the Infante stop.

For more information on the route and schedules see here.

These are some of the best beaches in Porto that you can reach by bus:

  • Matosinhos Beach
  • Praia do Ourigo
  • Praia do Molhe
  • Praia da Luz
You can buy tickets on the bus (cash), tap your Andante card or use the Porto card.

Porto Beaches by Historic Tram

The Porto tourist tram is a vintage tram that has been restored to its original condition, complete with wooden interiors and brass fittings.

With a history dating back to 1872, when the first line of “American cars” of the city of Porto was inaugurated, currently the historic trams serve two lines:

Line 1, or riverside line, makes the route between the historic centre of Porto and the garden of Passeio Alegre on a single path along the banks of the Douro River.  You can catch the tram in the centre at Infante.

Line 1 tram in Porto

Line 18 runs starts at  Carmo and goes to the garden of Passeio Alegre which is the closest stop to the Foz do Douro beaches such as Praia do Carneiro and Praia dos Ingleses.

Porto Tram City Tour operates daily, with timetable varying in different seasons. Check timetables for Line 1 and Line 18.

You can buy tram tickets onboard, however, note that they are more expensive than local normal public transport fares at 5.00 € per adult and 3.50 € per child.

Porto Beaches by Metro

The beach that is easily accessible by metro is the Matosinhos beach.

Take the blue metro line A in the direction of Senhor de Matosinhos to Matosinhos Sul station and walk a little.

You can buy fares on the metro, use your prepaid Andante card or use the Porto card.

To avoid fines, remember to buy correct fare for Matosinhos, which is assigned to Zone3 on the Metro do Porto.

Porto Beaches by Tuk-Tuk

Hire a tuk-tuk in the Porto city center and get to the most beautiful Gaia beaches fast.  You will cross one of Infante bridge over the Douro Valley and get all the way to the fishermen village of Afurada and Praia de Lavadores.
